Ferry/High-speed boat to Miyajima/Itsukushima Shrine|Fare and time for 3 routes

宮島への船乗り場アイキャッチ

Miyajima and Itsukushima Shrine are the most popular tourist destinations in Hiroshima, along with the Atomic Bomb Dome and Peace Memorial Park. It was also deserted after the Corona disaster, but is now beginning to bustle again with many students on school excursions and visitors from abroad.

The restoration of the Otorii, which took about three and a half years, was completed last December. We are now able to see that beautiful vermilion-lacquered appearance again.

Macckey

As a local resident, I hope that many people will continue to visit the shrine.

In this article, we have compiled information on ferries and high-speed boats for crossing to Miyajima from Hiroshima (including Hatsukaichi City).

There are three routes to cross to Miyajima from Hiroshima: from Miyajima-guchi, from Hiroshima Port, and from Peace Memorial Park. I will write details separately for each of them, and I hope it will be helpful for your travel plans.

Notice: Until the other day, this article was about “four routes” including “from Marina Hop,” but as of June 30, 2023, Aquanet Hiroshima’s regular service from Marina Hop has been suspended. The resumption of operation has not yet been decided. We will remove it from this article for the time being, and will add it when the service is resumed.

Incidentally, it takes about 15 minutes on foot from Miyajima Pier to Itsukushima Shrine. The Otorii (Grand Gate) is on the way.

I will share with you a beautiful video of the shrine from the ferry.

I have drawn a diagram of the four routes, so please take a look at it along with the article. Please use the “Back to Map” button along the way to return to this map as needed.
(The map includes the route from Marina Hop, but as I mentioned at the beginning of this article, this route is currently suspended. (Please note that this has not been corrected.)

INDEX

1 From Miyajima-guchi

This is the most common route.

  • JR Hiroshima Station → JR Miyajima-guchi Station (27 min.) → 5 min. walk to the boarding gate.
  • ( 2) Hiroshima Electric Railway: [2] Hiroden Miyajima-guchi Station, Kamiyacho in the city center → Hiroden Miyajima-guchi Station (approx. 50 min.) → Direct access to the boat entrance.

Three companies offer ferry services to Miyajima: JR Nishinippon Miyajima Ferry, Miyajima Matsushiro Kisen, and Aquanet Hiroshima.

Fares and time required from Miyajima-guchi to Miyajima are almost the same for JR Nishi-Nippon Miyajima Ferry and Miyajima Matsushiro Kisen. Aquanet Hiroshima” is more expensive and faster than the other two companies.

The boarding area is different, so please make sure to board at the boarding area of the company from which you bought your ticket.

Aquanet Hiroshima

Aquanet Hiroshima is famous for its “Hiroshima World Heritage Route,” which goes directly from Peace Memorial Park to Miyajima via the sea.

I tried the Miyajima-guchi – Miyajima route as soon as it started service.

However, the advantage of this route is that you can get a through ticket for the “Peace Memorial Park – Miyajima – Miyajima-guchi” route, which is a little cheaper than the two existing companies.
Therefore, we recommend this ticket for passengers coming from the Peace Memorial Park.

Most people who use only Miyajima-Miyajima-guchi usually use JR or Matsushiro Kisen, so even if JR or Matsushiro Kisen are very crowded on Sundays, this boat is relatively quiet. Also, the service is so fast that it is a little scary (laughs).

Also, please note that Aquanet Hiroshima has a different boarding gate from the other two companies(Miyajima Pier No. 3 / 800m north of Miyajima Pier).

Time required to MiyajimaApprox. 5 min.
Interval time between servicesApproximately every 20 minutes, 25 round trips per day
Sailing timeDeparture from Miyajima-guchi: 9:15-17:35 Departure from Miyajima: 9:25-18:05
FareMiyajima-guchi – Miyajima One way Adult 400 yen Child (elementary school student) 200 yen
Same round trip Adult 800 yen Child (elementary school student) 200 yen

Miyajima-guchi – Miyajima – Peace Park Passenger Ticket Adult 2,300 yen Child (elementary school student) 1,200 yen
*Reservations are required for the pass through ticket, please make a reservation on the web or call (TEL: 082-240-5955)
The boat is a small vessel with a capacity of 100 passengers, so cars and bicycles cannot be loaded.

The JR Miyajima-guchi and Hiroden Miyajima-guchi area underwent major construction last year (2022) and is completely new. A new facility called “etto” is directly connected to Hiroden Miyajima-guchi Station, where you can enjoy souvenirs and food and beverages from Hiroshima.

There are also some famous long-established stores nearby, such as Iwamura for momiji manju (steamed buns) and Ueno for anago meshi (rice topped with conger eels), and the area is bustling with people. (Momiji Honjin, formerly located at Miyajima-guchi, has closed.)

3 From Peace Memorial Park

High-speed boats to Miyajima are also available from near the Peace Memorial Park.

Aquanet Hiroshima “Hiroshima World Heritage Route
Peace Memorial Park Motoyasubashi Pier → Miyajima (Capacity: 56 passengers, 3 seats)

This high-speed boat connects the Atomic Bomb Dome, Peace Memorial Park and Miyajima in the shortest time.

This is an informational video from the Aquanet Hiroshima website, which we would like to share with you.

From the Peace Memorial Park, (1) “take a tram to Hiroden Miyajima-guchi Station and take a ferry” is cheaper than (2) “take a tram to Miyajima-guchi Station and take a ferry”.
It is more expensive, but it is easier because there is no transfer, and it is often used by those who want to go to Miyajima while enjoying the Seto Inland Sea from the riverside of Peace Park.

Since it directly connects Hiroshima’s two major tourist attractions, Peace Memorial Park and Miyajima, it is very popular with those who have hotels near Peace Memorial Park and those who do not have much time but want to visit both places! It is also very popular with those who have a hotel near the Peace Memorial Park or those who do not have much time but want to visit both places!

As mentioned in (1) above, an additional 100 yen (2,300 yen one-way for adults) for this “World Heritage Route” will get you a ticket to “Peace Park – Miyajima – Miyajima-guchi”.
If your plan is to go to Miyajima by boat from Peace Park and return by JR to somewhere else, this one-way ticket is a good deal.
(At the Miyajima Exit, there is “Ueno” for anago-meshi (conger eel) and Miyajima Osuna-yaki pottery, which you can enjoy as well.

Time required to MiyajimaApproximately 45 minutes
Service intervalApproximately every 30 minutes
Sailing timeDeparture from Peace Memorial Park 8:30-17:10
Departure from Miyajima 8:40-18:05
FareAdults (junior high school students and older) 2,200 yen one-way
Children (elementary school students) 1,100 yen one-way

For an additional 100 yen (one-way: adult 2,300 yen, child 1,200 yen), the ticket is Peace Park – Miyajima – Miyajima-guchi.
Discounts for disabled persons and groups are available.

As of October 1, 2023, a tax of 100 yen per visit will be charged in addition to the above fees as the “Miyajima Visit Tax.

Ferry/High-speed Boat Routes to Miyajima, Recommended Routes by Purpose

I would like to consider some recommended routes by purpose.

(1) To enjoy Miyajima in a relaxed atmosphere

This may not be a route, but if you want to enjoy Miyajima in a relaxed manner, the best thing to do is to stay at an inn on Miyajima. There are many long-established inns and hotels.

The next best thing would be to stay in the vicinity of Hiroshima Station and take a JR train to Miyajima-guchi in the morning.
You can take a ferry from Miyajima-guchi to Miyajima-guchi, and then take your time to explore Miyajima until the evening.

(2) You want to visit Miyajima as inexpensively as possible.

There are many inexpensive business hotels in the area from Hiroshima Station to Ginzan-cho. You can stay at one of them, take the JR train to Miyajima-guchi, and then take the ferry to Miyajima as in 1) above. This is a good route to take.

(3) You don’t have much time, but want to enjoy both Miyajima and Peace Memorial Park.

I think there are three ways to do this.

  1. Stay overnight in the Peace Park area the night before, visit the Peace Park in the morning, take the city train to Miyajima-guchi→take a ferry to Miyajima.
  2. Stay the night before in the Peace Park area, visit Peace Park in the morning→Take Aquanet Hiroshima “Hiroshima World Heritage Route” to Miyajima
  3. Stay overnight in Miyajima or at Miyajima-guchi the night before, visit Miyajima in the morning, and go to Peace Park in the afternoon.

If you want to visit two tourist attractions efficiently, Aquanet Hiroshima is recommended, although it costs a little more.

(4) If you want to go by car

There are not many parking lots on Miyajima Island. If you are coming by car, it is better to park on the Miyajima-guchi side; there are several large parking lots for tourists around JR Miyajima-guchi Station (most of them charge 1,000 yen per day).

Drive to Miyajima-guchi →Leave your car atMiyajima-guchiand take a ferry to Miyajima.

(5) Enjoy Miyajima and shopping

Shopping and dining can be enjoyed in the city center (Kamiyacho, Hacchobori, etc.) or at ekie, the station building of Hiroshima Station.

  1. Stay in the city center and take the city train to Miyajima-guchi→take a ferry to Miyajima Shopping in the city center on the way to or from Miyajima
  2. Stay near JR Hiroshima Station, take a JR train to Miyajima-guchi→take a ferry to Miyajima.
  3. Stay near JR Hiroshima Station, take JR to Miyajima-guchi→take a ferry to Miyajima Return by city train to Kamiyacho or Hatchobori. Or take the Aquanet Hiroshima high speed boat to Peace Park, return to Peace Park, and go to Kamiyacho or Hacchobori.

(6) Enjoy a relaxing hotel stay and the scenery of the Seto Inland Sea

The Grand Prince Hotel Hiroshima offers spectacular views of the Seto Inland Sea, as well as dining and events. It would be a good idea to stay here and take the Setouchi Sea Lane flight to cross over to Miyajima.

You can also go to Kure or Matsuyama from the Port of Hiroshima, so if you are planning to go sightseeing there as well, this would be a good option.

At the End

We have provided four routes from Hiroshima City to Miyajima.

Depending on where you stay, choose the one that best fits your travel schedule.

There are many beautiful places and delicious foods in Hiroshima, including Miyajima. Please enjoy your trip to Hiroshima with a relaxed schedule!

Enjoy your trip!

        ご存じでしょうか。
        分かりにくい質問をして申し訳ありませんでした。

        • 葉山様

          こちらこそ理解ができておらず申し訳ありませんでした。
          五日市に住みながら「五日市岸壁」というのを知りませんでした。(^_^;

          「広島港」と言うと我々すぐに、宇品にある「広島港」をイメージするのですが
          五日市のも「広島港 五日市埠頭」と言うんですね。
          今調べてわかりました。

          で・・・ざっと調べただけですが、
          多分「広島港 五日市埠頭」から宮島行きの船は無いと思います。
          (あるとお聞きだったでしょうか・・?)

          宇品(広島港)から宮島行き、はあります。

          もし今、「広島港 五日市埠頭から宮島行きフェリー」が新設されていればですが
          多分それは無いのではないでしょうか。
          五日市埠頭から宇品までは遠いですから、それは考えられない方がいいです。

          五日市埠頭から最も近い公共交通機関は、
          広島電鉄の宮島線電車の「佐伯区役所前」か、JRの五日市駅です。
          ですがどちらも駅まで2km余りありますので、歩くと30分くらいかかるのではと思います。

          バスか何かがあれば良いのですが、どうもこの五日市港あたりはバスがなさそうです。

          タクシーを呼んでJR五日市駅まで行かれて、
          そこから宮島口に行かれるのが良いのではと思いますが。。。

          ご参考になれば幸いです。

          どうぞ楽しいご旅行を!(#^^#)

          • マッキー様 お手数をおかけしました。
            ご親切にありがとうございます !
            やはりかなり離れているんですね。
            私の乗る船が着くと乗客を運ぶため五日市駅までの
            有料バスが出るようなのでそれを利用します。
            厳島神社には以前から行きたいと思っていました。
            今からとても楽しみにしています。

          • 葉山様

            ざっと調べただけでは「広島港 五日市埠頭」付近にはバス停がなかったので
            市内電車やJRの駅まで行くのも大変だなぁ・・と思っていたのですが、
            そうですか。大きな船が着くときにだけ特別にバスが運行されるのかもしれませんね。

            であればそれを利用されるのがベストですね。

            五日市埠頭から五日市駅までは数分で着くと思います。
            市内電車の五日市駅とJR五日市駅は繋がっていて、どちらでも宮島口まで行けます。
            JRの方が少し速く着いて、運賃は同じくらいかJRが若干高いくらいかな・・・そんな感じです。

            厳島神社、どうぞ楽しんでください。
            私のブログにも厳島神社の記事はいくつか書いていますので良かったらご覧ください。
            それでは良いご旅行を!p(^-^)q
