Hatsukaichi City, the western neighbor of Hiroshima City, is home to Miyajima Island in Aki, one of the three most scenic spots in Japan. Itsukushima Shrine, the center of the island, is a World Heritage site that preserves the elegance of the Heian period (794-1192). Although the island attracts many tourists from Japan and abroad, it is also a spot close to home for me, just 40 minutes from my house.
In addition to the corridors of Itsukushima Shrine and the Otorii Gate, there are many historic temples and shrines on Miyajima, as well as the power spot Mt. If you go there, please take your time and enjoy yourself.
In this blog, we have been writing about how to enjoy Miyajima and Itsukushima Shrine, which we know because we are locals.
This page is a summary of those Miyajima-related articles. If you are thinking of visiting Miyajima, we hope you will find this page useful.

I went to Miyajima with my brother who came back to Japan the other day, and we spent about 6.5 hours there. We visited Itsukushima Shrine, the Otorii (Grand Gate), Yayama (Mt. Yayama), and Miyajima Shopping Street. I thought it might be good for first-timers, so I wrote this article.
The Otorii (Grand Gate) of Itsukushima Shrine is very beautiful floating on the sea. But there are times when the tide is low when you go there. But don’t be disappointed. You can go down to the beach, walk to the Otorii, and touch it, which is a very precious experience! Please come and touch this World Heritage Site.
Depending on the weather conditions, at high tide, if the weather is fine, you can go to the Otorii Gate by a traditional rowboat called a rokaibune (oar boat). Passing under the Otorii floating on the sea is truly a wonderful experience. Please enjoy the video I shot from the boat.
The most common way to cross to Miyajima is by ferry from Miyajima-guchi on the other side of the island, but there are others, and there are a total of four routes. We have provided detailed information on routes, fees, and times for each. Please schedule your visit in conjunction with the Peace Memorial Park and other places of interest.
In this article, we have compiled a list of Itsukushima Shrine’s visiting hours, fees, and other details. We also took a video when we were there the other day. It is a little shaky, but you can get a sense of the atmosphere of the shrine. Please enjoy the pseudo-experience of the cloister! (^^)
The Underwater Fireworks Festival is held on Miyajima Island every year in early August. A total of about 5,000 fireworks are launched and large underwater fireworks! The night sky and the sea are beautifully decorated. We have compiled a list of highlights and points of interest. If you are planning to visit Miyajima in summer, be sure to enjoy this event!
