I have stayed in capsule hotels all over the place and have written about them in articles.
Capsule hotels are inexpensive, convenient, and easy to use, but compared to general business hotels, I feel that the manners of each and every user are very important.
In this article, I will try to summarize the manners and cautions for comfortable use of capsule hotels.
Of course, the rules and facilities vary in many ways from store to store, but basic manners are common.

We would be happy to help those who have started using capsule hotels or are thinking of using them in the future.
Capsule Hotels: 5 manners you should observe
The biggest difference between a capsule hotel and a business hotel is whether the room is locked or not.
This is classified according to the Fire Defense Law, which states that the entrances and exits of capsule hotels cannot be locked, and that the entrances and exits are only separated by roll screens or similar devices.

This inevitably means that you will hear other people’s noises and snoring. This is unavoidable due to the structure of the capsule. (The way you hear it varies considerably depending on the form and size of the capsule…)
If you can hear other people’s noises, you can also hear your own noises.
This is the most important manner.
1 Make as little noise as possible in the capsule room.
Of course, it is impossible to make no noise at all when you are staying in a capsule room. Making noise within the range of common sense is not a problem. However, there are many people sleeping in this space. It is strictly prohibited to intentionally shout or make loud noises. Specifically…
- Do not make phone calls in the capsule room
- Do not chat in the capsule room even if you have a companion.
- Use earphones when enjoying TV or music.
- Put your smartphone or cell phone on silent mode.
- When walking down the aisle, be aware of the sound of your slippers flapping.
Be careful when walking down the aisle.
In fact, most of you are very careful and courteous in your use of the site, being mindful of your surroundings.
However, the other day at a capsule hotel, there was a person who was talking loudly with his companion in the capsule room and calling his family in the early morning when everyone was still sleeping. I was appalled at the lack of common sense. In fact, I sometimes come across such situations.
If you want to talk with your companion or make a phone call, please leave the capsule room and go to a designated area, such as a break room.
Also, you can work on a computer or other work in the capsule, but if it is going to be a long time, it is better to work in the lounge or other places where it is easier on your posture and your mood.

2 (For men) Never enter the women-only floor!
In recent years, many capsule hotels have become available to women. Such places basically have a women-only floor separated from men.
However, other things vary from store to store. Some have separate elevators for men and women, but I think most of them are the same.
In many places, the door to the women-only floor is locked and you cannot enter without a card key. However, in some places, you can simply use the stairs to get to the women’s floor.
This is a matter of course rather than good manners, but even if a capsule hotel allows you to enter the women’s floor, men should never enter the women’s floor! Not intentionally, of course, but even if you make a mistake, you are out!
On the other hand, I don’t think there is a pattern of women entering the men’s floor, but of course that is also a no-no.
It goes without saying that public places should be used by both parties with good manners and moderation.

3 Observe the store’s rules and regulations
Smoking is not allowed in any of the capsule rooms. This must be absolutely observed to prevent fires.
Eating and drinking are allowed in some capsule rooms and not in others. Do not eat or drink in the capsule where it is prohibited. Most of the time, you can eat in rest rooms or cafeterias.
Some places ask you to wear barefoot inside the building, while others give you simple slippers free of charge and ask you to use them inside the building.
These are the main rules, which are explained to you by the restaurant when you check in, so please be sure to follow them.

It is not so much a rule, but there are places that say “please contact us” and others that say “no need to contact us” if you are going to be late for the check-in time you told us when you made your reservation. It is better to check this when you make a reservation. (If you are going to be late for check-in, it would be better to make a phone call in any case, though…)
4 When you go out, you should also do so in the manner prescribed by the restaurant.
There are times when you want to go out for a short time, for example, to eat or to go to a convenience store. In such cases, please follow the rules and regulations of each store.
Usually, there is someone at the front desk. When you go out, please say a few words and leave your key at the front desk in a prescribed manner (e.g., leave your key at the front desk).
5 When leaving early in the morning, please be especially attentive to details.
If you are leaving early the next morning, you need to be especially attentive and considerate, considering that many other people are still in bed.
Even if you are using a cell phone alarm, it should be set to vibrate only and not make a sound. (Some restaurants offer a service where the front desk staff will come to wake you up. ) In those places, by all means, take advantage of it.
When putting away your luggage, plastic bags from convenience stores make a lot of noise. (Be aware that this also bothers some people.
Considering all this, I think it is best to leave the detailed preparations for later, and first of all, to take a quick look at your luggage and leave the capsule room as soon as possible.
Once you are out of the capsule room, you do not have to worry about other people. You can freely prepare for your departure in the lounge or break room.

Other things to keep in mind
Check emergency exits first.
In case of fire, etc., do not forget to check the emergency exits first.
Capsule hotels have many capsules on one floor, and many have no windows. Some major ones have many aisles and are difficult to find.
All of them have non-smoking capsule rooms, but you never know what might happen.

Leave valuables at the front desk if possible.
Please be careful not to lose or have your valuables stolen by leaving your baggage in a locker and your valuables at the front desk.
(If there is a lockable valuables locker in the capsule, please use it.)
Basically, do not bring too much baggage into the capsule.
In general, do not bring too much hand luggage into the capsule, and keep the amount of cash you carry to a minimum, just enough to buy a drink. Some people take their wallets to the bath or shower rooms and leave them in the changing rooms, but this is also quite dangerous.
To end.
The above is what I wrote about the “manners of capsule hotels” that I usually feel when I use capsule hotels.
The most important thing is not to make noises inside the capsule. Also, you should observe the rules.
In other words, it is ” common sense and consideration for others.
As long as these are observed, both parties can use the capsule hotel comfortably.
Although capsule hotels have their disadvantages, they are also very helpful in reducing the cost of lodging. Please make good use of capsule hotels.
I will write about my impressions of capsule hotels on this blog as needed, so I hope you will find it useful.
I write reviews of capsule hotels and various other things about using them. You can see a list of all articles related to capsule hotels and jump to each article in the “Articles” section. Please take a look if you like.
