Many people outside of Hiroshima who are interested in Hiroshima okonomiyaki have heard of “Okonomimura “.
Okonomimura is a building with many okonomiyaki restaurants located in Shintenchi, the center of Hiroshima.
It is also a place with a history and story that was born out of the chaos after World War II. It is always crowded as a tourist spot, not only with locals but also with students on school trips and tourists.
There are other buildings with many okonomiyaki restaurants, such as“Okonomi Republic” also in Shintenchi and “Hiroshima Okonomi Monogatari Ekimae Hiroba” in front of Hiroshima Station, but Okonomimura is the first of its kind.
Okonomimura is a well-known place in the local area, but for those from other prefectures, it may be hard to know where it is located.
I visited there the other day and took some photos, so I would like to tell you how to get to Okonomimura from JR Hiroshima Station with photos.
Schematic diagram from JR Hiroshima Station to Okonomimura
First, please take a look at the overall map of Okonomimura from JR Hiroshima Station to other major points of interest.
The nearest station is “Hacchobori” on the streetcar line.

There are five possible ways to get to Okonomimura from JR Hiroshima Station.
- By streetcar from the South Exit of Hiroshima Station (get off at Hacchobori)
- By “Meipulup” bus from the North Exit of Hiroshima Station (get off at Hacchobori or Shintenchi )
- By city bus from Hiroshima Station South Exit Bus Terminal (get off at Hacchobori )
- By cab
- On foot
I will tell you about each of them.
From Hiroshima Station to Okonomimura (1) Take a streetcar from Hiroshima Station South Exit to Hacchobori
As for me, I think it is the easiest way to get there by using the city tram (streetcar).
How to get there…
First, let me explain how to get there from the Central Exit of JR Hiroshima Station.
After exiting the Central Exit, you will see a north-south free passageway. You will see a big sign that says “South Exit.
Go down the escalator (and stairs) to the 1st floor.
Follow the street for a while and you will come to a point where the streetcar and bus lines 6-9 and bus lines 1-5 divide, so take the streetcar and bus lines 6-9 (left).
Do not go to “Mazda Stadium” or “Taxi” before that point.
You will be on the tram platform.
All trams except No.5 stop at “Hatchobori”. You can take any streetcar bound for Miyashimaguchi, Eba, or Hacchobori, except the one bound for Hiroshima Port via Hijiyamashita.
Get off at the 6th stop, Hacchobori. It takes 13 minutes from Hiroshima Station.
The fare is 240 yen for adults and 120 yen for children (6 to 12 years old) and should be put directly into the fare box when you get off.
*As of February 1, 2025 (Saturday), all streetcars have a flat fare of 240 yen.
We have made a rough map of the area after getting off at the Hatchobori stop. The red line and arrows indicate the walking route.

Below is a photo explanation of the route of this red line.
After getting off at Hatchobori, cross the pedestrian crossing to the south and then to the west. The place you cross is the Fukuya Hatchobori main store.
After crossing, walk to the left (south).
The large street here is “Chuo-dori”. Go straight south here.
After passing Parco and other stores, you will see Don Quijote, so turn right here. It takes about 3 minutes from Fukuya to here.
Shortly after the turn, you will see a sign “Okonomimura” above. The building on the immediate left (Shintenchi Building) is the building where Okonomimura is located. Okonomimura is on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors of this building.
We have arrived. It takes about 20 minutes in total from Hiroshima Station.
There are stairs on the right side, so please go up to the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floor. (The name of the restaurant is also written at the entrance.)
If the stairs are crowded, there is also an elevator. Please do not force yourself to line up for the stairs, as it is dangerous.
Have a good time!
From Hiroshima Station to Okonomimura 2 Take the “Meipuru-Pu” (circular bus) from the North Exit of Hiroshima Station and get off at Hatchobori or Shintenchi.
In addition to the train, you can also conveniently get to Hacchobori by “Meiplup” bus operated by Chugoku JR Bus.
Meipuruupu is a bus service for tourists that circles from Hiroshima Station to major sightseeing spots in the city, with three routes: Green Route, Orange Route, and Lemon Route. Among them, the ” Green Route” and “Orange Route” are the two that stop near Okonomimura (Hatchobori or Shintenchi).
Please refer to the chart below for a quick overview of the Green Route and Orange Route.

There are three ways to get to Okonomimura by Meipuruppu.
2-1 Take the “Green Route” from Hiroshima Station to Hacchobori.
This is the best way. On the Green Route, Hacchobori is next to Hiroshima Station. The bus stop is slightly east of Hatchobori on the train, in front of Mitsukoshi (Nagaregawa Iriguchi).
The bus ride takes 7 minutes from Hiroshima Station, and the walk takes about 7 minutes by the same route as the train.

Note that the Meipurupu Green Route departs from Hiroshima Station approximately every 30 minutes, so you should account for the waiting time there.
2-2 Take the “Green Route” from Hiroshima Station to Shintenchi Station
If you want to reduce walking as much as possible, the “Shintenchi” bus stop is much closer than the Hatchobori one.
However, as you can see on the map, the Green Route goes from Hatchobori to the Atomic Bomb Dome, around the Peace Memorial Park, back to Chuo-dori, and stops at Shintenchi, which is a very large detour.
If you go from Hiroshima Station to the Atomic Bomb Dome, Peace Memorial Park, and then to Okonomimura, I think it is a good idea, but if you go directly to Hiroshima Station, I am not sure if it is worth the long wasted time.
It takes 22 minutes from Hiroshima Station to Shintenchi, and the walk takes about 3 minutes.

2-3 Take “Orange Route” from Hiroshima Station to Hacchobori
The “Orange Route” also stops at Hacchobori, but it goes from Hiroshima Station, through Hiroshima Castle, past the Atomic Bomb Dome and in front of Peace Memorial Museum, and again near the Atomic Bomb Dome, then eastward to Kamiyacho and Hacchobori. (See map).
Therefore, it takes 23 minutes from Hiroshima Station to Hacchobori. (The bus stop at Hacchobori is on the north side of Densha Dori)
So, this is the same as before, and it is convenient enough if you take the route from Hiroshima Station to A-bomb Dome or Peace Memorial Park, and from there to Okonomimura.
The Meipuru-Pu train stop at Hiroshima Station is
The Meipuru-Pu bus stop at Hiroshima Station is located at the North Exit of the station.
There is a large staircase leading down to the first floor on the north-south free passageway of Hiroshima Station.

The entrance of EKIE Dining is on the right. The entrance to EKIE Dining is on the right, and the bus roundabout is straight ahead.
The Meipuru-Pu bus departs from and arrives at the bus stop just after the bus roundabout.

Meipuru-Pu does not go to Miyajima, but it can take you to other sightseeing spots in the center of Hiroshima City. 220 yen per ride (adult) is the same as other city buses, but 400 yen per ride (adult) allows unlimited rides for one day, so it is a good deal.
- One ride costs 220 yen for adults and 110 yen for children (6 years old and older, under 12 years old). The price is the same as for city trains and city buses.
- One-day passes are available at the JR Express Bus ticket office on the 2nd floor of the Shinkansen Exit of Hiroshima Station or on board the bus. The fare is 400 yen (unlimited rides on the same day).
- The Green Route and Orange Route together run from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (until 7:30 p.m. between March 1 and October 31), and every 30 minutes or so, depending on the time. (Please see the official website for times)
- It takes 7 minutes from Hiroshima Station to Hatchobori.

From Hiroshima Station to Okonomimura 3 Take a city bus from Hiroshima Station South Exit Bus Terminal (get off at Hacchobori )
You can of course also take a regular city bus, although the tram or circulator bus may be easier to find.
The South Exit Bus Terminal is at the end of the temporary passageway at the South Exit mentioned in 1, on the right. (Reverse direction of the tram)
The bus terminal looks like this. There are many routes and different places to board, so please check the destination carefully before boarding.

[No. 22] Yokogawa Line (for Mitaki and Oshiba)

Bus stop: South Exit Bus Terminal
From Hiroshima Station to Okonomimura 4 How to get there by cab
Of course, you can also take a cab from JR Hiroshima Station. This is also a good option for families and small groups.
There are cab stands at both the South and North Exits, but the South Exit is currently under construction and there are only two cars waiting, so the North Exit cab stand would be better. The North Exit taxi stand is located in front of Hotel Granvia, a little further (west) from the Meipulu~pu stop.
The fare will be revised on 6/26/2023. Within Hiroshima City, the fare for a standard car is 750 yen for the first 1500 meters, and 80 yen for every 264 meters after that.
It is about 1.5 km from the cab stand to Okonomimura, so the fare would be around 800 yen.
It takes 6 or 7 minutes.
From Hiroshima Station to Peace Park 5 Walking slowly on foot while seeing the city of Hiroshima!
If you have healthy legs, it is a pleasant way to enjoy the scenery of Hiroshima city while going on foot.
The distance from Hiroshima Station is about 1.5 km. The time depends on your walking speed, but I think it would take about 25 to 30 minutes.
The easiest way to get there on foot is to follow the streetcar tracks, but you can also take a little back road if you aim for Chuo-dori Street.

Please use the Google map below.

History of Okonomimura (including related stories)
- The war ended in 1945. Hiroshima was devastated by the atomic bomb.
- In 1950, a group of okonomiyaki and ramen stalls appeared on Chuo-dori Avenue. This is also the origin of Okonomimura.
- In 1957, the food stalls moved to Nishi-shintenchi plaza and Higashi-shintenchi plaza (nearly 50 stalls).
- In 1965, Nishi-shintenchi plaza and Higashi-shintenchi plaza were developed as a park, and the stalls were ordered to move out. The 14 stalls that could not find a place to move to established Okonomimura in December of that year as a compromise with the city of Hiroshima.
- Opened in 1967 as a two-story prefab building (260 m2 / 14 stores). Gradually became a tourist attraction.
- In November 1990, it was temporarily closed due to the aging of the building. Moved to a temporary store.
- January 1992: Reopened as the current building (Shintenchi Plaza) (1,000 m2 / 27 stores).
- 2001 (Heisei 13) Okonomi Republic Hiroshima-mura opened in 2001 (4 stores)
- October 2006 (2006) Hiroshima Okonomi Monogatari Ekimae Hiroba opens (1 floor of 400 tsubo / 13 stores)
The following is a quote from the official website of Okonomimura.
After the war, the 50 okonomiyaki stalls that gathered in Shintenchi Square in the center of Hiroshima City were filled with the enthusiasm and humanity for the reconstruction of the city. Writer Minoru Kida, who saw this lively scene centering on okonomiyaki, said, “It looks just like an okonomimura,” hence the name “Okonomimura.
Okonomimura Official Website
When the plaza was turned into a park in 1963, the food stalls were evicted, and the two-story prefab-style store “Okonomimura” built in front of the park became nationally known and became a famous landmark in Hiroshima, attracting not only locals who support the Carp but also students on school trips and general tourists visiting from all over the country. In 1992, “Okonomimura” was reborn in a high-rise building, and we are still waiting for your visit with the same taste, liveliness, and friendly atmosphere as when it was born.
History of Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki
The following is also taken from the official website of Okonomimura.
History of OkonomimuraHistory of Hiroshima-style okonomiyakiHistory of Hiroshima-style okonomiyakiHistory of Hiroshima’s specialty, okonomiyaki, started as “Issen Yoshoku”, which was popular among the common people before World War II. It was made by mixing flour with water and baking it with green onions, dried shrimp, red ginger, etc. It was a kind of “snack” that was readily available at confectionery shops in town. It was only after the war that it became a meal. In order to compensate for the lack of nutrients, many stores around the city, including those in Shintenchi Square, as well as those using part of their own homes, added ingredients such as cabbage, eggs, seafood, soba, and udon noodles to their okonomi-yaki.

Summary
Okonomimura” is definitely a page in the history of Hiroshima okonomiyaki. I have been going there since the time when it was a two-story prefab building. It has been a while since I have been there, but after writing this article, I really want to go back.
I hope that many people, both from Hiroshima and from other prefectures, will try to go there.

Hiroshima okonomiyaki is delicious! Please enjoy it!
