One of the early summer festivals in Hiroshima is “Tokasan,” a three-day festival held in early June.
Officially called “Tokasan Grand Festival,” it is a long-running festival that has been held since the Edo period at Inarisan Enryuji Temple in Mikawamachi, Naka-ku, Hiroshima City, but is now familiar to people as well as events held on and around Chuo-dori Street.
Being born and raised in Hiroshima City, I am of course very familiar with it.
And Tokasan is also very famous as a “yukata festival” at the same time. Every year on this day, many people of all ages and both sexes put on their yukata and walk along Chuo-dori Avenue, which has been turned into a pedestrian paradise, to enjoy the early summer festival.
Nowadays, an event called “Yukata-de-Kinsai Festival” is held in conjunction with Tokasan, making it a three-day festival that can be enjoyed by a wider range of people. I often go to this festival myself.
Although the article was updated at the last minute, I will report about this year’s Tokasan with a summary of its contents here as well.
Please take a look at the video of Tokasan as well.
First of all, here is a video I took a long time ago of Tokasan’s Chuo-dori Street. It is very lively and the women in yukata are really gorgeous.
It is still a bit chilly to walk outside in yukata (especially at night), but it is very beautiful and cool to see people in colorful yukata.
The photos and video were taken a long time ago, around 18:00 in the evening in front of Parco on Chuo-dori. Every year, Tokasan has many stalls like this, and many men and women of all ages, including couples in yukata, are enjoying walking around (*^o^*).
Let me tell you about the “2025 Tokasan Grand Festival” and the “2025 Kimono-de-Kinsai Festival.
What is the date, time, and location of the 2025 Tokasan Grand Festival?
First of all, I will write about the “Tokasan Taisai Matsuri”, a festival of Tokasan Enryuji Temple in Mikawa-cho, though it is strange to say that the original….

The date and time of the festival are
This year’s Tokasan Grand Festival will be held on June 6 (Fri.), 7 (Sat.), and 8 (Sun.), 2025.
The hours are 11:00 – 23:00 (the festival will end at 22:00 on the last day).
This year will be the 406th year (406th year).
Location.
Tokasan Enryuji Temple is located in the center of Hiroshima City, walking all the way south on Chuo-dori Avenue, just before it hits Peace Boulevard (east side). From Hatchobori on the city train, it is about 400 meters, or a 6 or 7 minute walk. (8-12 Mikawa-cho, Naka-ku, Hiroshima City)
Click here for a map of the venue (near Tokasan Enryu-ji Temple)
During Tokasan, Enryu-ji Temple also offers a limited edition red seal for the 2023 Grand Festival. (Only during the Grand Festival. 300 yen).
I went to Enryu-ji on the first day of the festival to receive this limited edition red seal, which was distributed in 2028 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Tokasan Grand Festival.

In addition, for a 300 yen donation, you will receive a small “Hamauchiwa” fan, which comes in a bag with four different types of small fans, and it is fun not knowing which one you will win. (^^)
This video is a bit old, but I took it when I went in 2015. It was very crowded. (^-^;
I wrote about this area here, if you would like to read about it.

Enryu-ji Temple’s homepage is here.
History and events of Tokasan Enryuji Temple
Enryu-ji Temple (Enryu-ji Temple) is a temple of the Nichiren sect of Buddhism, and when it was founded in the Edo period (1603-1868), Inari Daimyojin was created as the deity. The temple was called “Tokasan” (meaning “the temple” in Japanese) because of the phonetic reading of the word Inari as “Toka” (meaning “flower” in Japanese). The original building was destroyed by fire in the atomic bombing, but the present temple was reconstructed after the war.
The “Tokasan Daisai” was originally held on the Dragon Boat Festival of the lunar calendar, but due to the yearly time difference in dates, the festival came to be held around June 10, close to the Dragon Boat Festival of the lunar calendar, which also means “to put Tokasan on the 10th.
What takes place at Enryuji Temple during the Tokasan Grand Festival is…
Inari Daimyojin, the deity of the temple, will be unveiled for the three days of the Tokasan Grand Festival. In addition, there will be a burning ceremony on the 7th, so if you wish to burn your omochidashi or amulets, please place them in the return box in the temple before then.
On June 6 and 8, the Hiroshima Taiko Preservation Society will perform a dedication drum performance in the temple grounds.
June 6 (Friday) | Industrial Development Prayer Ceremony (for companies that have made a dedication)
3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. (each performance lasts 20 minutes) | Hiroshima Taiko Preservation Society will perform a taiko drum dedication.
6:30 p.m. | Gokaicho Memorial Service
Saturday, June 7 | 3:00 p.m. | Obonakiage Memorial Service |
June 8 (Sun.) | 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. (20 minutes performance each time) | Hiroshima Taiko Preservation Society |
8:30 p.m. | Goshicho Buddhist memorial service |
In addition, you can get the “Haima Uchiwa” and the card-shaped amulet called “Ippofu ” at the shrine’s precincts.
To be honest, the temple grounds are small, but during the three days of Tokasan, it is very crowded and bustling.
