〈Festival details and photos are from when the article was first published in 2019, and revised in June 2025.
Tokasan” heralds the arrival of summer in Hiroshima. As a Hiroshimaite by nature, it is also a major seasonal event for me, but like many other events, it was not held for three years at the Corona Disaster Relief Center.
Then it was successfully resumed in 2023, and of course it will be there again this year! \\(*⌒0⌒)b
The period is this weekend, June 6 (Fri.), 7 (Sat.), and 8 (Sun.).
The weather forecast is cloudy on Friday and Saturday and 50% rain on Sunday. If you are going, I think it would be safer to go until Saturday. I hope it doesn’t rain on Sunday, though…
What is Toka-san?
Tokasan is a festival originally held at Inariyama (Mt. Inari) Enryuji Temple (Enryuji Enryuji Temple), located in Mikawa-cho, Chuo-dori, Hiroshima City. At the same time, it is also the “Yukata Festival,” when people in Hiroshima wear yukata (light cotton kimono) on this day. Many citizens come out to the city center wearing yukata or jinbei. Just looking at them makes me feel fresh, gorgeous, and happy.
During this time of year, the Hondori and Ebisu-dori shopping streets also play a central role in the “Yukata de Kin Matsuri” event held at various locations in the center of the city. This event has been going on for 20 years, and is also very enjoyable, with fun stages, food and drink, and experience corners.

We have been to Tokasan often, but the last time we took our time to go and photograph it was in 2019.
Below is an article I wrote at that time. It is a little bit old, but I wrote various photos and scenes from that time in this article. The events are quite different from this year, but I hope you can get a feel of the atmosphere.
Please enjoy the atmosphere of the festival if you like!
Here is the article I wrote when I went to the 2019 Tokasan Grand Festival, if you would like to read it.
The 2019 Tokasan was even more exciting than usual because it was the 400th anniversary of the start of the Grand Festival.
Also, special red seals were available only for three days, and as a red seal fan, I was eager to receive those as well.

It was around 3 p.m. on a Friday afternoon when not many people had gathered yet, but I went to the event and would like to tell you a little about it. I also visited the “Yukata de Kin Festival” held at the same time, although only for a short while.
Stalls lined up along Chuo-dori Avenue.
Every year, the festival is crowded at night and on weekends, but on the first day, a weekday afternoon, there were not so many people yet.
Even so, there were many stalls on Chuo-dori Avenue, and many women were already there in yukata.
There were many women friends, couples, parents and children, and many other people enjoying themselves as they walked along the street and visited the various stalls.

At night, there are yukata fashion shows, dances, and parades.
Enryu-ji Temple celebrates its 400th anniversary this year
Enryu-ji Temple is located 6 or 7 minutes south on Chuo-dori Street from the Hatchobori stop.
Since this is the 400th anniversary of the start of the Grand Festival, there were already quite a few visitors, even though it was early on the first day of the festival.

This is the entrance to Enryu-ji Temple. A huge number of lanterns are lined up. They are all lit up at night and look very beautiful.

Tezumisha (water fountain)

The place to pray is on the left.
There is a special awarding place for this occasion only, where you can get red seals and good luck charms.

Here is a red seal. It is a leftover red seal, but it is in color and beautiful. (300 yen).
The picture of the lantern and the orange band on the right are probably printed, but the words “Tokasan Grand Festival, June 7, 2028” in the center are gold and handwritten. The seal is also thought to have been stamped on each occasion.

By the way, the regular red seal is here. You can have it written at any time at the temple office on the first floor (300 yen). (300 yen).

Also, here is a red seal book. This is the one that is usually available. The design is very colorful and fun. (1500 yen).

Various uchiwa fans are distributed at the Tokasan Grand Festival, the most famous of which is the small 10-centimeter-long “Hazama Uchiwa” (breaking fan).

They come in five different colors, but the fun part is that you don’t know what color it is until you open it. When I got home and opened it, I found it was white.
Of course, I have already prayed for it, and it is something I will treasure as a prayer for my family’s safety. (300 yen)

Also available only at the Tokasan Grand Festival is a card-shaped amulet called “Ippoufu.
Of course, this is something to be appreciated, but it is also a kind of good luck charm, and you can get various items on the spot according to the number written on the back of the bag. I received a piece of candy. (*^_^*)
It’s a festival, and I think it’s good to have something fun like this. (300 yen)
Enryu-ji Temple’s website is here.
I also wrote an article about Enryu-ji Temple on my blog “Gosyuin LOVE! If you would like to read more about Enryu-ji, please visit.

Yukata de Kin Festival” at Chaleo Central Square
After leaving Enryu-ji Temple, I went to Chaleo Chuo Square to visit the “Yukata de Kin Festival” site.
The “Yukata de Kin Festival” is held by the Chufurren (Hiroshima City Federation of Central Shopping District Promotion Associations ) in conjunction with Tokasan, and features a variety of fun yukata-related events in and around the city center areas of Hondori, Chuo-dori, Fukuromachi Park, and Higashishintenchi Public Square.
There will be a yukata parade, a fashion show of new yukata, a “yukata market” where you can buy a yukata and wear it right away, a “yukata wo maitai shinshin-dai” where you can get your yukata fitted and fixed, and many other fun events.

Shaleo is an underground shopping mall located under the Kamiyacho intersection, and the “Central Square” is at the center of the mall.
This is one of the main points of the Yukata de Kin Festival.
It was the first day, a weekday (Friday), around 4:00 p.m., so there were not many people, but it gave the atmosphere of the festival.

The overall view is like this.

This is what the entrance looks like, adding to the atmosphere.

It’s a little hard to tell, but there is a “Yukata wo Mendaishin Daisai” corner in the back of the building. 7 (Fri.) & 8 (Sat.) 13:00 – 20:00 If your yukata is out of place while walking, go here!

If you buy a yukata at “Yukata Market”, you can have it fitted on the spot. There were many people watching.

You can take a commemorative photo with the event title in the background.

You can eat various sweets here.

If you are ever in Hiroshima, you are welcome to visit us!
All the places to eat around Chuo-dori were extremely crowded. If you want to have a meal, I recommend you to move to Kamiya-cho or Fukuro-machi area. (^_^;

There were many people on the main street. There were also many women in Yukata.

Higashi Shintenchi Public Square (they were having their annual Bon Odori dance)

Chuo Dori

Inarisan Enryu-ji Temple. There were so many people that we had to wait a long time to enter the temple.

You can just visit here from outside.
I have visited Enryu-ji many times during Tokasan, but it gets quite crowded in the evening. If you want to take your time to visit the temple and enjoy the award shops, it would be better to visit when the sun is high in the sky. (The gates open at 12:00 on the 6th and at 11:00 on the 7th and 8th.)
I have never been late at night, but I have heard that the shrine is open after 9:00 p.m., so if you prefer to go later, it would be better to go at that time. (The gates close at 23:00 on the 6th and 7th, and at 22:00 on the 8th.)
Finally.
This is a partially revised and updated article from my visit to Tokasan in 2019. We hope you enjoyed the atmosphere of Tokasan.
Yukata de Kinsai” This year, there will be no Kamiyacho Chaleo basement and Kokusai Hotel (under construction) at all. This may make the event a little smaller in scale, but I think you will still be able to enjoy it a lot.
It often rains at some point during the three days of Tokasan, but this year’s weather forecast is “cloudy on Friday and Saturday, with a 50% chance of rain on Sunday. I can’t help but hope that the weather will hold out for the festival.
I hope you will come to the festival!
